Sexual and Gender-Based Violence
EDUCATE, EMPOWER, SUPPORT
DAVS has established itself as one of the key players in the fight against SGBV, leveraging community partnerships and evidence-based approaches to drive meaningful change. The organization began its operations in rural communities with a specific focus on addressing the needs of sexual and gender- based violence survivors. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by individuals living in remote areas, the organization developed a comprehensive approach to ensure they receive adequate support and resources.
Dream Africa support services include the following;
Awareness and Education Dream Africa conducts awareness outreach, workshops and interactive sessions in remote communities
to educate individuals about the different forms of GBV, including physical, sexual, emotional, and economic abuse. These sessions combines presentations, group discussions, interactive activities, and guest speakers to create a dynamic and engaging learning environment. Through raising awareness, educating individuals, and promoting a culture of support, we can create a safer and more inclusive society for all.
Establishment of Strong Referral Networks
Creating and maintaining a robust network of service providers ensures that survivors can easily access the necessary care. This involves regular updates on available services and establishing clear communication channels among providers. We have successfully established a robust inclusive referral pathway known as Community-Based Action Teams (COMBAT) in remote areas of the Volta region to serve as a bridge between survivors and the law enforcement agencies, as well as service providers to ensure a consistent and coordinated response.
Legal Assistance and Support
Dream Africa provides direct legal assistance to survivors, including representation in court, assistance with restraining orders, and guidance on navigating the criminal justice system. We have partnerships with the regional legal aid commission and some civil society organizations that provide pro bono legal representation to survivors. By offering legal services and support, we help survivors navigate the
complexities of the legal system and increase their chances of obtaining justice.
Providing Comprehensive Medical and Psychosocial Support to Survivors
Dream Africa assist gender-based violence (GBV) survivors in accessing both medical and psychosocial support at health centers through a multi-sectorial approach that focuses on referrals and coordination. We work closely with health facilities in providing appropriate support for women survivors of GBV, and ensures that the GBV survivors we refer to these facilities receives the appropriate support by accessing
both medical and psychosocial support.
Economic Empowerment and Skills Training for Sexual Survivors of Gender-Based Violence
Dream Africa’s primary objective of the economic empowerment and skills training project for sexual survivors of GBV is to equip them with the necessary skills and resources to secure stable employment, financial independence, and overall well-being. By focusing on economic empowerment, we aim to break the cycle of poverty and violence, allowing survivors to reclaim their lives and pursue their lives.
