Childcare & Development

As part of our objective of promoting the welfare and development of children in rural communities of Ghana, we have established a Child Foundation that aims to help disabled, orphaned, poor and exploited children living in villages and small towns in Ghana. This is achieved through providing, promoting and advancing children’s rights to basic necessities, including education and health care, aimed at sustaining their long term development. In this regard, we engage both local and young people around the world who have passion for child development to participate in the project.

Due to extreme poverty, neglect and abuse, many children in Ghana are forced to leave their homes to live on the streets or forced into child labour and trafficking. Our organization’s initiative has tremendously improved the lives of children in Ghana. Our aim is to give orphanages extra support so they can provide the children with good quality food, clothing and school supplies. Through the commitment and dedication of our volunteers, we have contributed immensely to the basic education of these children who sometimes lack the quality foundation.

The child support centers needs extra pairs of hands to help with the day-to-day running of the project with works like cleaning, cooking and serving food to the children. Your attention and love to children will in the long run make a real difference in the life of a needy child. Whether you have a background in childcare or simply enjoy sharing love with kids, a smile can offer something meaningful to the life of kids deprived of love and care. Our placement program is opened to volunteers year round. The children in the orphanage are not only orphans but also needy children from poor families in the communities.

Placement is influenced by the skills, experience and interest of volunteers. The program is organized in such a way that Volunteer participants usually help out at a pre-school in the morning and later work at the orphanage in the afternoon after the school session. This arrangement is optional for volunteers; the children usually go to school in the morning so we do encourage volunteers to help out at a pre-school to occupy their time in the morning whiles the children are away in school. Some of the orphanages have a pre-school where volunteer participants can be placed. The project is categorized into two programs namely;

Working in an Orphanage/Pre-School

Volunteer’s role in an orphanage depends on the need of the home as well as the skills and interests of the volunteer. However, volunteers will be involved in the following tasks:

  • Develop creative programs such as dance, arts, music, etc.
  • Clean, cook and serve food.
  • Assist the staff in counseling the children.
  • Supervising day-to-day activities of the children at the orphanage (e.g., sweeping, bathing, washing, feeding in the morning afternoon and evening.
  • Assisting in keeping the children’s rooms clean, planning extracurricular activities, physical education, sports, music and culture, indoor and outdoor games, morning and evening studies, organizing beach and farm trips, excursions, etc.
  • Organizing children for extracurricular activities such as sports and games.
  • Helping prepare teaching and learning materials for the pre-school.

Please the above information are general responsibilities of volunteers in all our partnership orphanages. Responsibilities may differ in individual orphanages or child centers; your coordinator will briefly provide you detail information regarding your responsibilities in your placement orphanage.

Do not take the general responsibilities as your sole responsibilities. It gives you an idea of what to expect in the orphanage. You are required to be creative, independent and not afraid to use your own initiative. You are given a lot of freedom and flexibility to do what you see fit for the benefit of the orphans.
