OUR RESPONSE TO COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Dream Africa Volunteer Service is dedicated to working with the most vulnerable women, children, and communities to overcome poverty. Considering the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the livelihoods of the rural poor, DAVS has conducted a rapid assessment to understand how the pandemic has affected women and children living in Ghana. The study concluded that stigmatization against survivors of Covid-19 (and their families) has emerged as a major issue in the region.

The strategy of our response is to provide livelihood support, prevent the spread of COVID-19 and reverse the stigmatization trends in Ghana. Stigma and discrimination against survivors of Covid-19 and their families (including children), has been widespread, as there remains a common belief and fear that those who have recovered remain infectious. People who present symptoms of Covid-19, as well as those who have tested for it (whether or not the result is positive), are frequently stigmatized. As a result, many people shy away from testing, calling an ambulance, or even visiting a health facility when they are ill, for fear of being associated with the condition.

The present situation by the pandemic corona virus (COVID_19) threatens many communities in Ghana particularly women, girls and children because poor families lose their livelihood including income and in need of food and basic health care needs.

Preparedness & Response Plan

  1. Behavior Change Communications: We are tackling misinformation, producing and disseminating correct information including digital content on the pandemic and its prevention, including handwashing and social distancing.
  2. Building Long-term Resilience of Communities: To support post-pandemic recovery, we will be taking up livelihood, entrepreneur and skills training programs to empower women and girls living in deprived communities of Ghana.
  • Promoting community preparedness: We are distributing essential products such as soap, handwash, hand sanitizers, wet wipes and face masks in deprived communities leveraging our rural reach, and demonstrate their usage. In the medium term, our efforts will include local level production of face masks and hand sanitizers will be taken up through social entrepreneurs and, home isolation and law and order arrangements. Disinfection and cleaning services in community centres in the regions.
